Posting a Morning Report

Create Report

The following assumes some familiarity with the WordPress block editor, which allows you to visually edit posts by inserting “blocks” such as paragraphs, lists, and headings.

  1. Go to Morning Reports.
  2. Click Add New button.
  3. Change the Author to Jeff Cooper (jeff).
  4. Check the box labeled, Disable restrictions, located at the bottom of the morning report editor, in the Memberships section, sub sections Content Restriction.
  5. Title post and add body copy (see Additional Notes below).
  6. Insert a More block after the first paragraph or so to create an excerpt that appears on the website. This block does not display, but serves to denote the end of the excerpt. Content before the More block will be displayed as the excerpt.
  7. If the post begins with song lyrics, which is usually the case…
    • you may want to use a Verse block for this section to make formatting easier.
    • if the lyrics are on multiple lines, make sure there is a space at the end of each line because the excerpt does not display with line breaks and text will run together.
  8. If the end of the report says something like “Place picture of sq of 9 here”, remove this text and insert a Separator block at the end of the post with Style > Dots, and after that, a Square of 9 Product block.
  9. Replace image placeholder text with corresponding images supplied by client. To ensure you found all placeholder text, do a browser search (Ctrl + F) for the word “Place”.
  10. Preview the draft to make sure everything looks OK by clicking on View (the laptop icon) > Preview in new tab.
  11. Click Save Draft to publish later or Publish to publish immediately.

Additional Notes

  • Copy report title and body text from client’s email into a text editor, such as, Notepad (do not copy and paste directly from email to WordPress). Then copy from the text editor and paste into WordPress. You can paste the entire thing in one go by pasting into the Add title field. The first line will be used as the title and the rest will go into the post body.
  • Sometimes the line breaks will be inconsistent in the WordPress editor. You can remove an extra line break or paragraph break by backspacing over it. You can add a paragraph break (double spaced) with the enter/return key. You can add a line break (single spaced) by holding the shift key and hitting enter/return.
  • The client sends each image in a separate email, so it’s easiest to replace one image placeholder at a time with the corresponding image:
    1. Save the image attachment to your filesystem somewhere such as ~/Downloads.
    2. Make sure there is a blank line above the placeholder text.
    3. Drag the image onto the blank line. It will be highlighted dark blue. Then release. Alternatively, add image block and upload from folder on hard drive where images were saved.
    4. Remove the corresponding placeholder text in the WordPress editor.
  • There is no need to resize or adjust images in any way.
  • The client will usually specify a link to include, typically a music video or movie clip hosted on YouTube. The client often accidentally links to Google Search results for the video instead of the YouTube video itself. When the link starts with https://www.google.com/search, you need to translate this link into a direct link to the video:
    1. Follow the link.
    2. Right-click on the video title at the top of the page.
    3. Select Copy Link (or similar wording).

Posting a Nightly Report

Create Report

The following assumes some familiarity with the WordPress block editor, which allows you to visually edit posts by inserting “blocks” such as paragraphs, lists, and headings.

  1. Go to Nightly Reports.
  2. On the latest report row, click Duplicate. This creates a draft post with the contents of the duplicated post.
  3. On the new duplicate report row (labeled Draft), click Quick Edit and change the post title and slug to reflect the new report date.
  4. Change the Author to Jeff Cooper (jeff).
  5. Click Save Draft.
  6. Replace each section’s contents as appropriate based on materials supplied by client.
  7. Embolden the first line of each block in the New Trade Ideas and Swing Trade Ideas sections. If there are no new swing trades that day, use the text provided by Jeff or simply put No New Swing Trades and italicize.
  8. Embolden the first occurrence of the stock symbol (the first word of each line) in the Long Positions and Short Positions sections.
  9. Preview the draft to make sure everything looks OK by clicking on View (the laptop icon) > Preview in new tab.
  10. Click Publish to publish immediately.

Additional Notes

  • Note that the Uptrending Hit List and Downtrending Hit List sections carry over from day to day during the week. They are only updated at the beginning of the week.
  • All other sections change each day. If you are missing content for one or more of the sections, just leave them blank.
  • It’s easiest to keep the headings, separators, etc. and delete the contents of the sections, then paste the new content into the respective section and apply formatting to match what you replaced, if needed. TIP: the editor is a bit screwy. To remove the content of a section, click just before the first word in the section; hold the Shift key, and click just after the last word in the section; click the Delete or BackSpace key.
  • When you paste from the client’s email message, sometimes the line breaks will be inconsistent in the WordPress editor. You can remove an extra line break or paragraph break by backspacing over it. You can add a paragraph break (double spaced) with the enter/return key. You can add a line break (single spaced) by holding the shift key and hitting enter/return. On Windows, you have a better chance of preserving intended line breaks by copying and pasting into Notepad, then copy and paste from Notepad to WordPress.

Email Jeff

When you are done posting the reports, email Jeff the following:

**REVIEW THE REPORTS** and reply to this message with any issues that need correcting. Make sure to copy support@bigtech.com on any further emails about today’s reports, as srv.cooperreports@bigtech.com may not be checked until the next business morning.

Additional Notes on Timing

  • Jeff supplies report content by 7:00 AM CST
  • Post reports by 7:30 AM CST, the absolute latest is 7:45 AM (provided he gets us material on time)
  • The morning report is the most critical, so post it first.
  • The market opens at 8:30 AM CST.

The reports should take no more than 30 minutes so plan on starting at 7:00 AM (once you get the hang of it). If Jeff is more than 15 minutes late getting us materials, don’t worry about deadlines.
